GARAGE FLOOR PROTECTION

Just look what the car dragged in: rain salt, slush, grime, leaks and grease. Capture it all by parking on the CARPAD, a thick, rugged vinyl mat with a 1 inch raised edge all around. Your garage floor stays clean and undamaged, plus there is less chance of slipping or having stored articles ruined by a spill. The Carpad cleans up easily with a shop vac or rags.

The CARPAD is available in a wide variety of sizes, from a very convenient workbench size (36" x 18") to a monstrous one that's 32' x 10'. You have a choice of gold or silver in most sizes, and it costs from $20 to more than $250. The typical mid size car version costs about $120. Contact the company to find the nearest dealer.

KEEPING FLOOR CLEAN

At last, an offbeat invention that will please those tidy and particular persons who don't like the snow melt-off that turns a garage floor into slush pile.

It's called the CARPAD, a garage floor cover made of idustrial-weight vinyl with raised sides supported by reinforced rubber hose. The reinforced sides enable you to drive over the sides of this device and then the melted snow is captured in the CARPAD. Later you can sweep the water out, remove it with a wet/dry vac or a squegee. The pad also will protect from the dirt, sand, salt and other debris that is captured by the snow and ice.

The company makes these pads for snowblowers, motorcycles, small and large cars, and even fire trucks.Fire departments number among some of the first customers.

The pads are made in many lengths and widths to fit most vehicles and are 1 inch deep, which is enough to hold 110 gallons in a pad for a large car.

"ASK ANN AND NAN"

SYNDICATED COLUMN

Dear Ann and Nan: I read sometime ago in your column that one can purchse a mat for one's garage floor that catches the ice and water that falls off the car. I misplaced the name of the product

and the advice. J. Brown, Beloit, Kan.

Dear J. Brown: Winter must be coming. Yours was about the the fifth letter we received asking for exactly the same information so we thought we'd better repeat it. The CARPAD is available from CARPAD, Inc. 1-800-635-7927. It covers the entire surface under your car (you drive onto rather than over it) and has a 1 inch raised edge. The largest size holds over 60 gallons of "crud" before needing to be cleaned off with a squeegee or shop vac. There are six different sizes, so when you order it is important to specify your cars make, model and number of doors. CARPAD can then select the size designed to achieve a 6 inch to 12 inch border around your car. Prices range from $120. to $197. depending on size.

THE GADGET GUYS / David Novak & Christopher Russell Do you ever wonder where we get those gadgets ideas to review? Well besides our readers requests we pick devices and items that solve our own problems. Selfish, eh? A perfect example is this weeks gadget, the Oil Absorbent Mat. Pictureif you will a garage floor that's so full of gunk it looks like the car got hold of a bad burrito. It never fails, after the car is backed out of the garage, there resides an oil and antifreeze milkshake that is harder to get rid of than a stray puppy. And, oh by the way, children (like David's kids) love playing in the grease pit and subsequently tracking it through the family room. The situation is no good. People will give you home remedy ideas like clay or birdseed sprinkled on the oil spill, but the only thing you've acomplished is the fact that you just tar-and-feathered your garage floor. You now have an ugly stupid mess that might get you kicked out of the neighborhood association. The Oil Absorbent Mat comes to the rescue. Place this mat under the engine area of your vehicle to keep your driveway or garage floor free of leaks. It eliminates the need for degreasers, drip pans and clay absorbents. Based on the same technology used to clean up ocean oil spills, the absorbent side of the mat works like a sponge to disperse oil, gas or coolant spills evenly. A non-penetrable "stain stopper" mat back won't rip or crack, even after extended use. It collects waste for proper disposal to protect our environmant. For our product test, we parked two cars that were suspicious of faulty leaking over the Oil Absorbent Mat, and let them sit there for a week. The car performed like a champ, leaking all sorts of stuff onto the mat. When they say that it absorbs... it really absorbs. We needed a crane to lift it away. Actually, it did gain about two pounds, but the company taht makes it, CARPAD, Inc. says that it will hold over eight quarts of leaking fluids, oil, slush, rain and sludge. The mat is pretty compact as well. It covers the engine area of your car, the most likely spot for a leak. Some mats out on the market are nylon, anfd they cover more tahn half your garage. In addition, they slip and slide. The Oil Absorbent Mat satys in place. We tried to move it by kicking it and stomping on it. It didn't budge, but I got a bruised toe and Chris is in traction. At $19.95 the Oil Absorbent Mat is practically disposable. In fact, it is. We wouldn't recommend tossing it in the washer, or then the price jumps to $419.95, (get it?..$19.95 for th emat and $400 for a new washer.) It is definately a one-time-use product, however it will last you a good two-or-three years. There are some mats out on teh market taht run $150 and $200. In our expert opinion, we think the Oil Absorbent Mat is the ticket. You pay about an eightth of the price and it will probably last you as long as those more expensive models. You can find this product at CARPAD by calling 1-800-635-7927.

"What's New / GARAGE GEAR"

Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines the noun "garage" as "a shelter or repair shop for automotibe vehicles," which may have been the original purpose, but it's one that has changed considerably over the decades. The dictionary's definition of the word as a verb - "to keep or put on the garage"- is much more accuratenowadays. Homeowners have been cramming so much into their garages that, in some cases, the vehicle winds up in the driveway or at the curb, looking longingly at what once sheltered it from the elements. Shelves and other storgae aids, lawn & garden equipment, tools, freezers, washers and dryers, and a myriad of other items deemed not suitable for display in the house proper have been relegated to the garage, rapidly supplanting the basement and attic as a storeroom, especially for heavy goods and/or those designed for messy cleanups....CARPAD can help keep the garage floor clean, a rugged vinyl covering that prevents liquids, dirt, and other things that you might bring in on the bottom of the car from coming in contact with the floor. A one-inch raised edge all around it traps liquids so that might be stored in the garage, flowing under wall bases into the rest of the house, or soaking into the floor to cause mold or mildew. Any liquid that accumulates on the pad can either be squeegeed out of the garge later or sucked up into a wet-dry vacuum. The CARPAD comes in gold or silver vinyl with a 90 day warranty and runs between $119-$199, depending on the size of the vehicle. When ordering specify model, make, year, and number of doors so that the proper size can be determined. Buy direct from CARPAD www.carpad.com or 1-800-635-7927.

"KEEP YOUR GARAGE DRY"

December 2003

CARPAD prevents water run-off from messing up the floor. It's a common problem for many homeowners. Yo pull your wet car into the garage on a rainy or snowy day and water drips from the car onto the floor, accumulating in some areas and spreading to the edges of the wall. This causes not only stress for your spouse as you track dirty water and slush into the house but, more importantly, severe water damage to the garage over time. Carpad, a garage floor covering that fits under your entire car, offers an effective, inexpensive solution. It's constructed of industrial-strength vinyl, with a one inch raised edge to keep gallons of water, mud, snow, oils and solvents from spilling onto the floor. Accumulated water can be either brushed off the pad and out the garage door or cleaned up with a wet/dry vacuum. There is also an optional liner for chained or studded snow tires. Installation is very straightforwrd and consists of unfolding the CARPAD and simply sliding four radial tire cord hoses in pockets on the sides and ends to create the one inch raised border. CARPAD manufacturing by CARPAD, Inc. of Dayton Nev., retails for $145. to $225, depending on the size of your vehicle, and can be ordered by calling 800-635-7927 or by visiting www.carpad.com.

RICHARD RUSSELL

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

You've finally got your garage to where it is clean and sorted out — maybe even a fresh coat of paint on the floor, or maybe you just got your first garage. But your vehicle, maybe an old favourite, has a nasty habit of dripping body fluids, resulting in a stain at best or a slippery puddle.

In either case, they can't be removed and you've got a big old stain on the floor. Using a garage for something other than storage makes it all but impossible to keep the floor clean, even because of tire marks alone. If you live in an area where they use salt on the roads, you know the result of parking a vehicle on a concrete floor. But, with a protective pad from Carpad, you can maintain the surface of the floor while dressing up the garage.

Since 1993, Carpad has been producing a patented, year-round, industrial vinyl garage floor cover. These units, with 2.5-centimetre raised sides and a 20-millimetre thickness, catch not only leaking fluids, but melting snow and ice, preventing them from getting to the surface of the floor. They come in silver or gold colour, are sized to cover the entire area beneath your vehicle, and can contain, depending on size, from 60 to 120 gallons of water, snow, salt, sand, grease, grime, battery acid and antifreeze.

The Carpad is available in six sizes, ranging from 7 feet 4 inches by 14 feet to 9 by 22 feet, and priced from $145 (U.S.) to $225. Also available is a cleaner that can be used to remove stubborn spills or stains and for detailing interiors, and disposable 6 by 20 foot mats capable of absorbing up to a quart of petroleum products while repelling water — perfect for those do-it-yourself oil changes and tune-ups.

Carpad also makes pads for vehicles with chains or studded tires, and military spec and race car pads for outdoor use with tethers and stakes. Check them out at Carpad.com or call toll-free at 1-800-635-7927.

"Just want you to know how much we love our new Carpad. It is so great to not have a wet garage floor. It was easy to assemble and put down and we really love it. Living in Wisconsin we get a lot of snow and mud and it used to be all over the garage floor. Now it is all contained nicely. Thanks for a great product. I also got a boot mat which is great." Lin Lehmicke 01/01/01

"This product sounds like a life saver for our garage. It's floor was poured improperly and slopes towards the house instead of the drive leaving huge puddles when we have snow. It will be a pleasure to pull into the garage without worrying about trying to remove as much snow as possible so that the garage doesn't flood. Thanks for a great product!" Ms. Cheryl Brogdon 01/18/01

"We finally got the opportunity to test our CARPADs yesterday. We were hit with a snowstorm that dumped 10 inches of heavy wet snow in our area. We had laid out our CARPADs over the weekend and were ready for the storm. I pulled my snow covered car into the garage and went inside my house. Usually, I remove as much snow as possible to limit the amount of flooding that occurs as the snow melts. Well not this time and I am happy to report that we have a dry garage! All the water was contained on the pad. My husband's vehicle and my vehicle left copious amounts of water on our CARPADs, but not on the floor! Wow! A product that works and works well! Thanks for creating a great product that was easy to install and actually works! The Brordons 02/05/01

Rating: OK "The ordering process went fine: the only glitch was not all of the merchandise was shipped the first time. However, Carpad readily corrected the missing items AND even included a couple free gifts. I would definately order from them again. Sue Clark 03/05/01

Dear CARPAD: "I wanted to drop you a note to let you know how pleased I am with your customer service and your great product, the CARPAD! It is a real pleasure being able to walk across a dry garage floor; void from the Northeast snow and slush, as well as trapping the leaks from our old car! Thanks again, Kevin Ferris 03/12/01

Hi, I just bought and assembled a Midsize CARPAD. I have a suggestion for you that makes assembly of the CARPAD easier....... I thought you might want to know of this 'trick' I used. After laying out the CARPAD and not wanting to use vinyl cleaner or water and a little liquid soap to lubricate the pockets before inserting the hoses, I charged up my air compressor and using a "blowgun tip", found a real easy way to insert the hoses. With the blowgun tip inserted into one end of the vinyl pocket and blowing large volumes of air, my 'helper' was able to very easily insert the hose into the vinly pocket. We just moved around all four corners an used this trick easily. Try this yourself.... you will find it works great!!!! Thanks R.F. 10/04/01

THANKS VERY MUCH......Your CARPADs are an ideal solution to our messy winters. I'm sure we'll be buying more as time goes on. Larry 10/31/01

GREAT PRODUCT! My 3rd and 4th ones. Everytime we move, the buyer wants the CARPAD!! to stay with the house. We won't move again!! THANK YOU. Craig Jones, N.C. 11/07/01

I ordered one CARPAD already. I really lie it and am ordering another for my other vehicle. It keeps everything in the garage dry when the snow melts off. Thanks a lot for a great product! T.Hunt, ND 11/28/01

Dear. Mr. Saylor, "The reason for my question is simple. I am thinking of purchasing my second CARPAD but before I do I wanted to confirm that it does not come with the cheap plastic border as the first one I bought did. As you can see from the photos the plastic over the course of a year or so tends to break when driven over. I just purchased a 20'x9' for my wife and was about to ordr a 22'x9' for myself. I thought it was strange that the 20' x 9' had the hose border and the 22' x 9' did not. It is my opinion that the hose border is much better than the plasic border and therefore if it were the plastic I would not buy another one. I greatly appreciate your attention to this matter. I thank you in advance for your response". Sincerely, Frank Yanag1, Fairbanks Alaska 09/13/04

"To whom It May Concern: About 5-6 years ago I bought a CARPAD through Frontgate catalogue when I moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota. It was great for the Minnesota winters and the slushy springs. About a year later we again ordered what we thought was a CARPAD for the second car. I don't recall the ad in the Frontgate Catalogue but thought we were getting the same thing. Unfortunately we were sent a vinyl pad with plastic borders which lasted just over a year before the plastic started to breakdown. It soon became useless. It wasn't a CARPAD. Thankfully we found you on the web and just ordered the second CARPAD. The first one is still going strong. Thanks for keeping my garage floor clean and dry here in the Northland." Your truly, Paul Etzell 11/22/04

2nd Order...Thanks! " Ordered a replacement for my 9 year old standard (gold colored) vinyl CARPAD today. Having a split level house with double car garae under the house next to the living area, the CARPAD had kept the garage floor dry with no melted snow coming into the living area rug from the garage which often had to be taken with a wet and dry vacuum and dried out with fans. Found that lubricating well most of the two long side hoses with a little liquid soap in water before inserting it into sides greatly facilitated setting up the pad by one person. One of the greatest sho items I have - I would not be without it!" Richard Coggon 1/24/05

"I have been wanting to e-mail and kept forgetting. I got my CARPAD last Wednsday and since last Thursday the CARPAD has been faithfully catching ALL and containing ALL the slop from our car. Thank you for making a fine product that does what is advertised. I believe I have convinced my dentist to order one when he gets his garage cleaned out enough to put one down. I may even help him put it together after he gets it." T. Schultz 01/29/05

"Thanks for the reply. I did get a discount on the new CARPAD. This product is so awesome for keeping my garage free of ice and snow and melted mess. Thanks again." Michael Conway 02/10/05

"Last June I ordered a CARPAD for my basement garage, which lacks a floor drain. Living in the Finger Lakes region of central New York, I was in the habit of keeping my vehicle outside in bad weather when ice/snow/slush would stick to the underside of it during winter conditions. No more! The CARPAD handled very easily whatever dripped off as things melted, and was easy to keep clean with a push broom and a watering can. I can't thank you enought!"
